Portsmouth Police Motorcycle Unit Competes in South Carolina
By Admin | June 23, 2009
Representatives from the Portsmouth Police Department’s Motor Squad attended the 4th Annual Palmetto Police Motorcycle Skills Competition in Charleston, SC. A police motorcycle training skills competition is a way to improve and showcase the skills and abilities of law enforcement motorcycle riders.
A skills competition is made up of several events that help to determine the overall best riders. These skills are put to the test through a series of performance under pressure events.
It takes a great deal of practice to be able to handle the shear weight and size of the motorcycle. The basic idea of police motorcycle training is to make the motorcycle itself work to its maximum potential. A simple philosophy of motor officers is if you hit or rub a cone in training you have just struck a pedestrian.
During the two day event, the competitors displayed their skills by maneuvering and tackling 10 different courses and obstacles that would make the average rider cringe. The conditions were almost unbearable, there were recording breaking heat advisories of over 110 degrees that had not been seen since 1984, and the site’s pavement alone was recorded at a blistering 139 degrees.
After the last rider completed the course objectives, we are proud to say that Officer Gregg Fisher and Officer Mark Lewis from Team Portsmouth took 2nd place in two divisions out of 65 competitors from six different states and Canada.
