A skills competition is made up of several events that help to determine the overall best riders. These skills are put to the test through a series of performance under pressure events.

It takes a great deal of practice to be able to handle the shear weight and size of the motorcycle. The basic idea of police motorcycle training is to make the motorcycle itself work to its maximum potential. A simple philosophy of motor officers is if you hit or rub a cone in training you have just struck a pedestrian.

During the two day event, the competitors displayed their skills by maneuvering and tackling 10 different courses and obstacles that would make the average rider cringe. The conditions were almost unbearable, there were recording breaking heat advisories of over 110 degrees that had not been seen since 1984, and the site’s pavement alone was recorded at a blistering 139 degrees.

After the last rider completed the course objectives, we are proud to say that Officer Gregg Fisher and Officer Mark Lewis from Team Portsmouth took 2nd place in two divisions out of 65 competitors from six different states and Canada.

I would like to welcome you to the 5th Annual Chesapeake Bay Police Motorcycle Rodeo and Skills Competition. This event has been designed to allow Police Motorcycle Officers the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in the operation of their “Wheels” as they navigate their way through a series of obstacle courses.

The event is hosted by the Portsmouth Police Department for two main reasons. First it permits the various members of the surrounding law enforcement agencies to meet and discuss progressive ideas that improve the overall effectiveness and safety of our Police Motorcycle Programs.

Second, the competition provides another avenue for us as law enforcement officers to interact with the members of our community that we faithfully serve everyday. I encourage you to speak with the officers, ask questions and cheer them on as they participate in today’s competition. At the end of the day I am sure that you will leave with a greater appreciation of the skills required to effectively operate a motorcycle under the various conditions that they encounter everyday such as ceremonial escorts, close quarter maneuvering and routine police operations.

All proceeds from the 5th Annual Chesapeake Bay Motorcycle Rodeo and Skills Competition will be donated to the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes has launched an initiative to reduce premature birth through education and research. With statistics showing that 1 in every 8 babies is born premature, I hope you will join me in supporting this worthwhile March of Dimes endeavor.

I would also like to take a moment to thank the members of the Portsmouth Police Department Strategic Traffic Unit, our fellow law enforcement partners and our sponsors for their continued support, hard work and dedication in making this year’s event a success.

Sincerely;

Ed Hargis
Chief of Police
Portsmouth Police Department
