From The Chief
I would like to welcome each of you to the 4th Annual Chesapeake Bay Police Motorcycle Rodeo Competition. This event is an opportunity for Police Motorcycle Officers to sharpen their skills while enjoying friendly competition. It also provides the opportunity for members of various law-enforcement agencies to come together and share ideas and concepts for the mutual benefit of Motorcycle Officers. Furthermore, this event is an excellent occasion for the various agencies to nurture their relationships. I am excited to invite the community to support this event and cheer on the participants. Building police-community relationships is a common priority among the various agencies represented in this Rodeo.
Please take the opportunity to speak with the officers as they are practicing and competing. I am confident that each of you will leave today with a greater appreciation of the skills required to effectively operate a motorcycle under the various conditions such as ceremonial escorts, maneuvering in close quarters, as well as routine police operations.
All proceeds from the 4th Annual Chesapeake Bay Police Motorcycle Rodeo Competition will be donated to the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes has launched an initiative to reduce premature birth through education and research. With statistics showing that 1 of every 8 babies is born premature, I hope you will join me in supporting the March of Dimes in order to protect our future generation.
Lastly, I would like to thank the Portsmouth Police Strategic Traffic Unit for initiating this event over three years ago and for the dedication and hard work to host this event. Without our repeat sponsors support, we would not have been able to give the $19,000 to date to the March Of Dimes. I extend many thanks to all of you who contributed and helped toward the success of this Rodeo. I sincerely hope you enjoy your visit to Portsmouth and that you find much excitement in this event.
Sincerely,
Edward G. Long
Chief of Police
Portsmouth Police Department
